HALLOWEEN FEVER

JUST A FEW DAYS LEFT BEFORE THE HALLOWEEN CELEBRATIONS!!!

A bit of history

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.
To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.
During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.
By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.
The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.
By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.

Politics Texas style

This blog should not normally be used for serious politial debate.
One exception comes to mind though, the campaign for Governor of the great State of Texas.

Texas is unlike any other US states, it pretends to be a country of its own.
It reminds me of a blend of the State of Goias and of the Triangulo Mineiro.
Their politics are usually extremely conservative and the inhabitants quite religious.
They listen to country Music and it is acceptable to walk down the streets wearing jeans, cowboy hat and cowboy boots. Definitely the opposite of New York city.
All in all Texas is a rather strange place.

This year you have a few independent candidates running for the post of Governor of Texas.
The politics are not unlike Brazil´s but in a country where the norm is to have only a candidate from the Republican and another from the Democrat party challenge each other; the candidacy of Kinky as an independent is refreshing.

It is good to challenge the status quo where neither the Republicans nor the Democrats have anything new to say. Kinky will not probably win but he is at least amusing.
His buddy in the above picture is Jesse Ventura, a former wrestler who became governor of the state of Minnesota, so who knows.....

A escritora Katherine Mansfield nasceu no dia 14/10

Katherine Mansfield (born Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp October 14, 1888 in New Zealand; died January 9, 1923) was a famous author.
Born into a socially prominent Wellington family, Katherine's first published stories were in the High School Reporter, the Wellington Girls' High School magazine, in 1898 and 1899. She moved to
London in 1902, where she attended Queen's College, London. A talented cellist, she was not at first attracted to literature, and after finishing her schooling in England, she returned to her New Zealand home in 1906. Weary of the provincial New Zealand lifestyle, Beauchamp returned to London two years later.

VERMONT

A new Dynstar I class opened today, discussing the state of Vermont. The name of the state in French means green mountain (Vert Mont).
Vermont is almost the smallest state in terms of population of any other US state, it has the least populated capital: Montpelier.
The state has a large Quebec French influence and several people in the Northern part of the state still speak Quebec French.

Some famous people were born there: Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon church, John Deer, one of the inventor of the tractor, Calvin Coolidge, the only American president born on the 4th of July! Montpellier is the only US capital without a Mc Donald restaurant.
The state is beautiful especially in the fall when the trees turn different colors (the state tree is the sugar mapple tree) , in the winter when the snow blanket the State (great skying on Jay´s Peak), in the spring when the landscape turns green and millions of flowers bloom and finally in the summer when you discover the beauty of the back country by hiking its hills and valleys.

CHOCOLATE CHIPS COOKIES

ON THURSDAY WE MADE COOKIES!!!

CHOCOLATE CHIPS COOKIES

Ingredients:
1 ½ c. butter, softened
1 ¼ c. white sugar
1 ¼ c. brown sugar1 T. Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla
2 eggs
4 c. all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 ¾ tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1-12 oz. pkg. semisweet chocolate chips. (2 c.)

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix butter, sugars, vanilla and eggs in large bowl. Stir in flour, soda, salt, baking powder and cream of tartar. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop with a #40 scoop (looks like a metal mini ice cream scoop) or a rounded measuring tablespoonful about 2 inches apart onto an ungreased insulated baking sheet. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until light brown. Cool slightly: remove from baking sheet. Cool on wire rack. Makes about 4 dozen crackly, chewy-crispy bakery-style cookies. They are wonderful!
